I was totally appalled last Wednesday night when I saw a Liberal Party advertisement announcing that they were responsible for giving Canada universal medicare. Nothing could be further from the truth. From 1919 through the mid 1950s, the Liberals pretended to offer medicare, but never followed through when they were in government. Tommy Douglas is the father of our medicare, but it was former prime minister John Diefenbaker, a Conservative, who implemented it.
