Moving houses could be cheaper than demolition

Esquimalt taxes, village plan

As the old song goes, “You got to have an ace in the hole.”

Already small businesses in Esquimalt are paying approximately $9,700 on average per year in property taxes for the privilege of doing business in Esquimalt. It is a wonder they can make it.

Each one of the municipally owned houses the Township of Esquimalt is tearing down, is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If the interest rate goes up, taxpayers might wish those houses were sold instead of demolished, and the money put down on the debt.

Another option could have been Nickel Bros. House Moving? Would it have been cheaper, if Nickel Bros. just came and took the houses away?

Are there any more aces?
