Rabbit cull tarnishes human character

Re: No more rabbits at UVic (News, April 1)

I don’t mean to beat a dead horse, and pardon that hideous metaphor, but I must repeat the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

The expiration of the provincially mandated permits allowing sanctuaries to accept rabbits from UVic should not be synonymous to a death sentence for innocent bunnies. Especially at Easter time.

The bunnies – no matter how they got there – should be allowed to stay there, or at least, to stay alive.

I am totally against animal cruelty of any kind. To kill large groups of them is an abuse of power and speaks volumes to the nature of the human character.
