Cougars ready for second round of hockey playoffs

The Victoria Cougars win the first round of the playoffs with a 4-0 game sweep of the Kerry Park Islanders

Nathan Looysen and Devin Mackey scored two goals apiece as the Victoria Cougars completed a four-game first-round Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League playoff sweep of the Kerry Park Islanders following an 8-2 win on Tuesday night.

Also scoring for the Cougars were Wade Johnson, Lane Van de Wetering, Sam McMullen, and Marino Somerville.

Grant Payne and Zack Kerr combined to make 16 saves for Victoria.

Replying for the Islanders were Cody Short and Patrick Poets.

Leighton Williams stopped 33 shots in the loss.

The Cougars went 3-for-8 on the power play; meanwhile, Kerry Park finished 1-for-6.

Victoria, who scored 31 goals in the four games, now awaits the winner of the Saanich Braves-Westshore Wolves series.

Having split the first four games of the series, the Braves and Wolves headed into game 5 Wednesday night. Saanich won the previous game 6-5 in overtime, after trailing 5-1 in the second period.
