LACROSSE: Shamrocks recruit NLLer; Jr. 'Rocks season preseason ends

Jamie Shewchuk’s name may not ring any bells with Victoria Shamrocks fans yet, but the recent recruit will be a household name with lacrosse fans this summer.

Shewchuk, 25, is currently in his fifth National Lacrosse League season for the Minnesota Swarm. He is the latest high profile signing for the 2011 season.

Originally from Edmonton, Shewchuk played his final two years of junior lacrosse with the powerhouse Burnaby Lakers, winning the 2005 and 2006 provincial championships.

Shewchuk decided not to continue his summers in B.C., however, and played senior B in his home province while playing professionally in the NLL during the winter. To get Shewchuk, general manager Chris Welch traded the first-round pick in the 2013 WLA draft.

Jr. ’Rocks season starts

The Victoria Shamrocks finished their B.C. Junior Lacrosse League exhibition season with a win over the Nanaimo Timbermen 11-6 at Bear Mountain Arena Saturday.

Scoring for the Shamrocks were Adam Brown, Devon Casey and Chris Wardle, each with a pair of goals. Ben Stebbins, Blair Pinnock, Jamie Sorensen, Braden Kmita and Tom Arsenault had the other Shamrock goals. Brown also made four assists.

The Jr. ’Rocks start the regular season in Delta on Saturday (April 30) and are home to the New Westminster Salmonbellies, 5 p.m. on Sunday.
