UVic Vikes This Week: basketball season kicks off at home

The UVic Vikes women’s soccer team (9-1-4) locked up second place in the Pacific Division and are set to host the first round of playoffs.

The Vikes drew 0-0 against the Canada West leaders Trinity Western (10-3-1) on Friday and then won 6-0 over Fraser Valley (4-6-4) on Saturday.

Calgary Dinos (7-4-3) and UNBC Timberwolves (3-7-4) play wildcard game this Friday in Victoria for the right to face the Vikes in Sunday’s quarter-final match at Centennial Stadium. Sunday’s winner moves on to the Canada West Final-4, hosted by the highest remaining Prairie seed.

Sunday, Oct. 29: CW Quarter-final: Vikes vs. winner of Calgary/UNBC (2 p.m. – Centennial Stadium)

Women’s basketball

The Vikes women’s basketball team looks to build on their experience as hosts of the 2017 U Sports national championship. The season opener is this weekend against UBC Okanagan.

Coach Dani Sinclair returns as for her sixth season. Amira Giannattasio, Kristy Gallagher and Marissa Dheensaw all return as veterans for the Vikes.

Men’s field hockey

The Vikes men’s field hockey team are still on the hunt for their first win this season. The young squad led by coaches and former Vikes Derrick Norton and Mark Erickson will head to Surrey to play the West Coast Kings this weekend.

Women’s golf

Fresh off a team win at the recent Vikes Shootout at Cordova Bay the Vikes women’s golf team will head to their final tournament of the fall season before regrouping in the spring for NAIA championship qualifications.

Vikes play Oct. 30 and 31 at Cal State San Marcos Invitational, held at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos, Calif.

Vikes rowing

Following a successful weekend of the Head and Tail of the Gorge the Vikes will play host for the second-straight weekend as teams from Western Canada will be featured at Elk Lake for the Western Canadian University Rowing Championship. Qualifications are on the line for the upcoming Canadian University Rowing Championship, hosted Nov. 4-5 at Burnaby Lake.

The fall season is a big one for the Vikes program as the teams host a series of upcoming events.
