Shamrocks open with win over Lakers; Jr. and Int. ‘Rocks results

Senior Shamrocks win first game with goals from Mike Pires, Matt Yager and Kory Kowalyk

If the Victoria Shamrocks are going to win this season it will be from the efforts of scorers such as Mike Pires, Matt Yager and Kory Kowalyk.

The trio of locally produced, junior Shamrocks graduates scored five goals in total as the Shamrocks defeated the Burnaby Lakers 11-7 in the first game of the Western Lacrosse Association season on Friday (May 18).

Yager scored the last two goals of the game, part of a four-goal run by the Shamrocks to break a 7-7 tie in the third period.

Transition stud Jeff Shattler was named first star in his return to the Shamrocks with two goals and two assists.

Next up for the senior squad is the first home game, Friday against the Maple Ridge Burrards at Bear Mountain Arena, 7:45 p.m.

Thunder cripple Jr. ‘Rocks

Junior Victoria Shamrocks sniper Brody Eastwood continued his strong offensive season with two goals and two assists in Langley on Saturday but the Thunder prevailed 10-8.

Conrad Chapman, Oliver Phillips, Blair Pinnock, Shea Wakefield, Jake Emms and Chris Wardle also scored for the Shamrocks.

The Jr. ‘Rocks return to Bear Mountain Arena on Saturday (May 26) against the Burnaby Lakers, 5 p.m.

Baby ‘Rocks grab first home win

The intermediate-A Shamrocks picked up its first home win of the season by putting an end to the league-leading Richmond Roadrunners’ undefeated season.

The Shamrocks battled back from a 4-1 deficit to win 13-11.

Leading the way offensively for the ‘Rocks was captain Max Fredrickson with five goals and a helper. Jakje Cullen, Jordan Cunningham and Darrin Wilson each chipped in a pair of goals while Dane Sorensen had four assists.

Next home game for the intermediate Shamrocks is Saturday against the Port Coquitlam Saints, 1:30 p.m.
