Stelly’s junior basketball girls steal first place

Basketball tournament at Parkland secondary ends well for rivals Stelly's of Central Saanich, less well for North Saanich host team

A strong Stelly’s junior team snagged first place at Parkland over the weekend.

The girls basketball team finished first, defeating a Surrey secondary school for the top slot leaving Earl Marriott school in second. Nanaimo’s Wellington secondary rounded out the top three with a win over Gulf Islands. The host Parkland team finished seventh in the eight-team tournament.

“Despite some unfortunate results, the Parkland ladies did play hard and are showing a lot of improvement this season,” said coach, Kirsten Dibblee.

Across the water at the Gulf Island secondary school tournament, Stelly’s senior girls finished fifth. The girls were filling a space left by the Parkland senior girls who pulled out of that eight-team Nairn Howe tournament that saw both boys and girls teams descend on Gulf Islands secondary school for the weekend.

Mill Bay’s Brentwood College girls finished first in that tournament, with Gulf Islands in second and Woodlands secondary from Nanaimo in third place.
