Indoor rowing isn’t an oxymoron, it’s a part of life.

Up to 500 competitors are expected to jam McKinnon Gym on Sunday Sunday (Feb. 5) as the University of Victoria hosts the B.C. segment of the 27th annual Monster Erg indoor rowing competition.

The event starts at 9:30 a.m. in UVic’s McKinnon Gymnasium and runs simultaneously in five locations across the country, part of the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship. UVic’s Monster Erg is the Western-most site of the championship, with concurrent events in Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax.

The UVic-based Erg is also a satellite event for the Crash B Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships in Boston later this month. As many as four rowers can qualify for Boston should the meet the qualifying times on Sunday.

Most races are 2,000m with 1,000m and 500m races, and a 4x500m relay race for novice and alumni crews. Monitors display live results.

Admission to the event is free, and so is campus parking on Sundays.
