University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball players look to hit their targets this week, during the 15th annual USports Shoot for the Cure.
Vikes players began the initiative Feb. 1 and each aims to shoot a total of 100 free throws, with the team’s goal to raise $2,000 by Feb. 11 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
“This event has a special place in our hearts, as it initially began in recognition and support of Vikes legend Kathy Shields during her battle with breast cancer,” said head coach Carrie Watts. “Cancer still sadly affects the lives of too many people, and we hope that initiatives like this can make a positive impact on the fight against cancer.”
Vikes basketball teams raised a record $15,100 for the cause last year, after getting a boost from Vikes senior director of athletics and recreation Clint Hamilton and Vikes fan Scott Lake.
The Shoot for the Cure finale game happens Friday (Feb. 11) when the women’s Vikes host Thompson Rivers University at 5 p.m. at UVic’s CARSA gym. A variety of related fundraiser activities will be held on the night, including chuck a duck and ‘stats for the cure,’ where corporate and other interested donors can pledge for made three-point shots, free throws and total rebounds.
