Velox rugby club caps season with player awards

A week after a provincial championship was snapped from the clutches of Velox’s women’s team, the Saanich rugby club’s third-division men’s team suffered a similar fate.

Playing at North Vancouver’s Klahanie Park on Saturday, Velox fell to the Kats (Vancouver), 24-13.

Velox led 13-5 at the half on two penalties by Aaron Frisby and a maul-driven try by Chad Vath off a lineout. But the early lead didn’t last as the Kats scored a come-from-behind try in the final minutes to seal the win.

Season awards saw Eric Lopatinsky and Tobias Berg both named the club’s most dedicated players at the men’s premier level. Cam Neish was named the men’s premier MVP and Adam Roer the rookie of the year.

Reynolds grads Cory Walker (most dedicated) and Talon Peters (most improved) were acknowledged at the first division level.

Fly half Sarah Levson was named the women’s team MVP for 2010-11, helping bring the Valkyries within one play of the B.C. championship. Shannon Kane and Jessica Dovanne were named best forward and back, respectively, with Hannah Yow the most improved of the premier women. Courtney Sims was the MVP of the Velox Velites (women’s second division).

Allen Hall was MVP of the men’s Velox Thirds and Paul Eby as the Thirds' Wily Vet.
