(VIDEO) Los Angeles Kings win 2nd Stanley Cup in three years; Justin Williams wins Conn Smythe

Alec Martinez scored the Cup-winning goal 14:43 into the second overtime period – his second series-winning OT goal these playoffs.

Marian Gaborik opens the scoring for the Los Angeles Kings

Alec Martinez scored the winner 14:43 in the second overtime and the Los Angeles Kings have won their second Stanley Cup in three seasons, in five games over the New York Rangers.

Justin Williams opened for the scoring for Los Angeles and was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP, after leading the Stanley Cup Final in points. Williams scored nine goals in the playoffs and had seven points in three Game 7s against San Jose, Anaheim, and Chicago.

The New York Rangers took a 2-1 lead into the third period after two middle frame goals from Chris Kreider and Brian Boyle, before Marian Gaborik tied the game for Los Angeles 7:56 into the third period.

“Hats off to the New York Rangers,” said Alec Martinez to CBC’s Scott Oake, after the win. Martinez praised his Kings for their collective leadership and for their historic run in the playoffs.

The Kings are the first team to win the Stanley Cup after opening their playoffs with three seven-game series.

“I’m so proud of these guys… I’m just happy to be a part of it.

“To win the Stanley Cup twice in my career so far is a blessing.”

Martinez described himself as “the benefactor” on his overtime goal, which was his second series-winning sudden death winner in these playoffs. The d-man banged home a rebound on Rangers goalie Henri Lundqvist, after the goalie kicked out a shot from L.A. winger Tyler Toffoli. Martinez scored the winner in OT against Chicago in the Western Conference Final, as well.

The Kings have now won two Stanley Cups in their franchise history in three visits, dating back to their first unsuccessful trip in 1993. Los Angeles Kings won its first championship in 2012, also over a Metropolitan team along the Hudson River, the New Jersey Devils.

Darryl Sutter took over coaching duties with the Kings in the middle of that season when the team was 12th placed in the Western Conference, and has now won two Cups since arriving in Hollywood – the only two in his long playing and coaching career in the NHL.

Anze Kopitar led the playoffs with 26 points in 26 games, one point ahead of his teammates Jeff Carter and Williams.

Marian Gaborik – who the Kings picked up at this year’s trade deadline, had 22 points and led the NHL with 14 goals in the playoffs.
