Field hockey captain Perri Espeseth was given the coveted President’s Cup, capping the UVic Vikes 2010-11 awards evening Thursday night.

Held at the Victoria Conference Centre, UVic also honoured three new inductees into the UVic Sports Hall of Fame: Greg Streppel (swimming), Eric Hinrichsen (basketball) and the 1970/71 men’s rugby team.

The President’s Cup is awarded annually to a fourth or fifth year student who excels scholastically and athletically. Espeseth ended the year as the second-leading goal scorer in the Canada West with six. She was also named to the 2010 CIS first all-star team and to the CIS national championship all-star team.

Basketball player Kayla Dykstra (Calgary) and cross country and track runner Darren Mazzei (Regina) were the President’s Cup finalists. Mazzei did come up big, however, as the winner of the Chancellor’s Award for contributions to the team in and out of competition.

Rugby player Phil Mack (Victoria) and golfer Anne Balser (Digby, N.S.) were the male and female athletes of the year, respectively.

Soccer player Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam) and rugby player Dustin Dobravsky (Saskatoon) won the respective women’s and men’s Robert T. Wallace Shield rookie of the year awards.
