BC Hydro pole replacement ramps up in Victoria

Victoria residents will be notified if short-term power outages are expected in neighbourhoods

Hundreds of wooden power poles will be replaced in the coming months across Victoria, as part of BC Hydro’s ongoing maintenance program.

The poles have a lifespan of 40 to 50 years, and can be weakened by adverse weather, insects and other wildlife during that time.

Affected residents are always contacted during pole replacements in case of short-term power outages, said a BC Hydro spokesperson.

More than 10,000 of the roughly 900,000 wooden utility poles across B.C. will be replaced this year. The network carries 56,000 kilometres of distribution lines across the province.
