Victoria’s hippest church hosts jazz trumpeter Patrick Boyle for an inviting evening service this Sunday (April 17).

Boyle moved to the Capital Region from Toronto last fall to teach jazz studies at University of Victoria. This is the first time he’ll bring his experimental music to Church of the Advent’s popular Jazz Vespers series.

No stranger to the stage, the Newfoundland-raised musician has performed across North America, Europe and Australia.

His work can be heard on more than 40 recordings and two critically acclaimed solo albums, Still No Word (2008) and Hold Out (2005).

He’ll be joined on Sunday by Rob Ahad on piano and Brian Anderson on bass.

The trio will provide accompaniment as a minister reads and comments on scripture and leads hymns.

The 7 p.m. service is free and open to all at Church of the Advent, 510 Mount View Ave. in Colwood.

It is the second to last event in the monthly Jazz Vespers series. The band Something Different will close the season May 15.
