3 taken to hospital, pickup driver suffers serious injuries

A pickup driver suffered serious injuries after police say another driver ran a red light late Wednesday night.

A driver southbound on Douglas Street ran a light and hit the side of a truck eastbound on Bay Street, pushing it into a transit bus, witnesses told VicPD.

An officer came across the crash while on patrol March 20 just after 10:30 p.m.

When they arrived, the front of the car was in flames. The officer and bystanders got the driver and a passenger out, VicPD said in a statement.

The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with serious, possibly life-altering injuries, while the two occupants of the car reported minor injuries, and were also taken to hospital.

Passengers on board the Route 4 bus at the time did not report injuries, but the vehicle itself suffered significant damage to the front.

“Safety is our top priority at BC Transit. We will assist the Victoria police in their investigation into the incident and we will also be conducting an internal investigation,” the statement said. “ … our thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident.”

The intersection was also the site of a dramatic four-vehicle crash in August 2019.

Captured on video, that crash involved a driver fleeing after VicPD officers attempted to pull them over near Gorge Road and Rock Bay Avenue.
