WorkSafeBC has issued a $10,000 fine to a Victoria asbestos abatement firm for repeat asbestos violations.

WorkSafeBC says the violations put workers at serious risk and the penalty was published publicly this month on WorkSafeBC.com.

The firm was conducting asbestos abatement at a house and WorkSafeBC inspected the worksite and issued a stop-work order after observing multiple deficiencies with the firm’s practices for working with asbestos-containing materials.

According to WorkSafeBC, the firm failed to prevent the spread of asbestos dust and debris to other areas, didn’t make sure workers were adequately trained on how to properly use personal protective equipment and didn’t use acceptable practices for controlling and handling asbestos.

Windows and other openings were also not adequately secured to prevent the release of asbestos fibres.

WorkBC says the firm failed to ensure workers issued respirators requiring an effective seal with the face were fit-tested.
