Pharmacy Technicians are in demand

An exciting health care career with rewarding benefits

As the heart of any pharmacy team, the role of a Pharmacy Technician is expanding due to growing demand across Canada. If you’re collaborative person with a passion to help others lead a healthier life, consider a career as a Pharmacy Technician!

More than what meets the eye

A Regulated Pharmacy Technician (RPhT) for over two decades and program co-ordinator for Stenberg College’s Pharmacy Technician program, Rapinder Chahal highlights the growth of the career.

“There’s so much to do. You could go into many different areas within a hospital, and the profession is becoming more specialized.”

Rapinder discussed her role in a federal government-funded special project as an example. “I mix doctor-prescribed heroin for 140 patients addicted to recreational drugs and dispense it in syringes,” she explained. “I really get to know people. When I walk down the street, they’d go ‘Pharmacy coming through!’ They recognize you because you help them. Once I heard someone on the phone saying, ‘Guess what, honey? I got into the program!’ I was blown away because I didn’t know how much it meant to people.”

Study at home, train in labs

While recovering from a serious medical condition, single-mom Charlene Pritchard discovered Stenberg’s Pharmacy Technician Diploma program and had an epiphany: “How am I not a Pharmacy Technician?”

The 43-week combined delivery format allowed her to study theory from home and attend labs for hands-on training. She loved it.

“It’s a respectable career. You help people and are challenged every day. You’re never bored. It has all the pieces I was looking for,” she shared. Charlene was hired from her practicum placement upon program completion.

Stenberg’s program is fully accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP) and 100 per cent of Stenberg College’s Pharmacy Technicians grads find employment within six months of program completion.

Stenberg College has free information sessions scheduled on Vancouver Island for its Pharmacy Technician Diploma program: March 5 in Victoria and March 6 in Nanaimo. To attend a free info session on Vancouver Island, register here.
