Man arrested for theft of poppy donation box

Police say investigation continues into female co-conspirator

An arrest has been made in the case of the poppy donation box that was stolen in a View Royal convenience store on Nov. 3.

The Regional Crime Unit nabbed 50-year-old offender Darcy Bruce Morgan as he left his apartment on Craigflower Rd. in Victoria on Friday, Nov. 15. Police say they have identified Morgan using in-store surveillance footage provided to the West Shore RCMP.

The box was stolen from the Mac’s convenience store at 1510 Admirals Rd. A female co-criminal distracted the clerk while the male stole the box, making off with cash intended for the Royal Canadian Legion to help support veterans.

Morgan has been charged with theft under $5,000. Based on his extensive criminal record and other pending charges, Morgan remains in custody, at least until his next court date on Nov. 28.

Officers believe they have also identified the woman who allegedly helped in the theft, but Staff Sgt. Gary Schenk of Saanich Police said more analysis of the video will be necessary to determine her room.

“The investigation, with respect to her, is continuing,” Schenk said.
