New South Island federal riding approved

The newly created riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford groups Langford and the Highlands with its western communities

New federal electoral boundaries in the Capital Region are now finalized, and there are no surprises for local voters.

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission released its final report last week, creating a seventh seat on Vancouver Island and another six seats across B.C.

The newly created riding of Cowichan-Malahat-Langford groups Langford and the Highlands with its western communities, while Saanich-Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca encompasses Sooke, Colwood, Esquimalt, View Royal, Metchosin and a part of Saanich.

Local MP Randall Garrison successfully fought to include Esquimalt in the title of the new riding.

Federal ridings are reviewed every 10 years with a goal of creating areas of roughly 105,000 people.
