No justification to 40 km/h speed zones: City of Victoria staff report

The recommendation from transportation manager Brad Dellebuur? Don't do it.

Victoria council directed transportation staff to study the need for lowering speed limits along several key arteries in the city last November. The recommendation from transportation manager Brad Dellebuur? Don't do it.

"Based on a review of operating speeds, and roadway features/physical environment, there is no technical data to support the reduction in speed limits on the arterials," Dellebuur wrote in a report to council.

The areas being considered for 40 km/h speed limits are Richmond Road, Douglas Street south of Belleville Street; Bay Street and Gorge Road.

Council will discuss the report Thursday at its governance and priorities committee meeting, where they may also choose to proceed to public input on pilot lower speed limits.
