A six-year-old girl was uninjured after her mother drove their truck into a lighted construction sign on the Pat Bay Highway Monday night.
The 27-year-old mother was arrested for being intoxicated and police say she has never been issued a valid driver’s licence.
“When our officers arrived, there were concerns about (the driver) being intoxicated,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen. The 27-year-old Saanichton woman was taken to the Saanich police department where a breathalyzer indicated her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
The Ministry of Children and Families was contacted about the six-year-old girl, who was taken home by relatives who came to pick her up.
Neither occupant was injured in the crash, which occurred around 9:50 p.m. in the 4800-block of the Pat Bay Highway.
Witnesses reported that the green Ford Explorer didn’t attempt to brake or swerve prior to hitting the large, electronic construction sign.
The woman faces charges of impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
