Slick roads, whiteout conditions halt drivers across Greater Victoria

Up to 25 cm expected across the region this evening and overnight

Heavy snowfall Monday afternoon has left many roads slick and some areas in whiteout conditions.

The Pat Bay Highway is particularly bad warns Central Saanich Police Service via Twitter.

They’re on Highway 17 just south of Island View Road with vehicles stuck in the snow and ice in both lanes. Traffic in the area is backed up and moving very slow.

BC Transit advised passengers to expect delays and even route cancellations. In an update on Twitter, BC Transit noted it will be cancelling a number of routes this evening and will likely only be servicing main corridors that have been plowed.

Several vehicles have been left on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway near Thetis Lake, as well as on other major routes throughout the West Shore.

Saanich Police and Sidney North Saanich RCMP warned drivers early to prepare, in light of the up to 25 cm of snow expected to fall across the region this evening and overnight.

“Many people aren’t familiar with snow driving, and over estimate their abilities (or their vehicles capabilities) and this could cause unnecessary calls for service,” RCMP Cpl. Chris Manseau told Black Press. “With the anticipated snowfall tonight, people need to remember that although right now they may be able to get to their destination, they may not be able to safely get back, and this too will cause more trouble than necessary.”
