Victoria police officer's assault trial begins

The criminal trial of VicPD Sgt. George Chong started last week.Provincial court Judge Herb Weitzel heard arguments from the defence lawyer for Chong, a 29-year veteran police officer, as well as the case's special prosecutor. Chong is charged with assault for injuring Frank Blair in VicPD's jail in January 2010. On Friday, court heard Chong made Blair lose consciousness by squeezing his neck with one arm. Then, Blair fell, hitting his head and splitting his lip.The trial continues May 17.
