Passed away on December 28, 2007 at the Gorge Road Hospital at the age of 87. Born in Saskatoon, SK. she was a daughter of the late Bernard and Carrie Mitchell and wife of the late Joseph I. Westad.

Muriel is survived by her niece, Eloise (Don) Sweeney and her nephews, Murray (Connie) Nixon and Benny (Sandy) Nixon and their families as well as many other nieces, nephews and family members in Saskatchewan, Ontario and the USA. Muriel will also be remembered by her brother-in-law Maurice (Bea) and sisters-in-law. She is predeceased by her sister, Elsie Nixon and her brothers, Nevelle and Roy Mitchell.

Muriel taught in Prairie schools for 8 years and then moved with her husband Joseph to Sooke in 1948. She taught at Elders Logging Camp and Sooke Elementary School for 31 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church and Evening Guild. She taught piano and was a member of the Church choir and she loved to travel with her family and friends.

We would like to thank all the staff at the Gorge Road hospital for their care and patience over the last year.

A funeral service was held on Friday, January 4, 2008 at First memorial Funeral Service, 4725 Falaise drive, Victoria.
