HIGH SCHOOL HOOPS: City basketball championships underway

It’s high school basketball playoff season, starting with city championships at the AA and AAA levels.

Claremont is hosting the junior boys Island championships, ending Saturday (Feb. 19). Semifinals are at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The junior boys final is at 6:30 p.m.

Claremont will also host the boy’s AAA Lower Islands, Feb. 24 -26.

The Saint Michaels University School and Lambrick Park senior boy’s teams are the favourites to meet in the final of the Lower Island AA senior boys championships. Lambrick hosts that tournament this weekend.

SMUS bettered Lambirck in a thriller last week to win the Lower Island AA league. Finals go Saturday at 3 p.m. Joining SMUS and Lambrick are the Gulf Islands, Brentwood College, Parkland, Esquimalt, Shawnigan Lake and Edward Milne. The top four qualify for the Island championships in Ladysmith, Feb. 24-26.

Games are taking place all over town for the senior girls AAA basketball city finals featuring Oak Bay, Spectrum, Mount Douglas, Stelly’s, Reynolds, Claremont and Belmont. Third place game is 6:30, p.m., final is 8:30 p.m., Saturday at Oak Bay High.
