The fallout from Thursday’s Game 3 between Montreal and New York continues to be felt, particularly in that bone below Derek Stepan’s enamel.

A late hit from Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust – a former teammate of Stepan – left the Rangers forward with a broken jaw. Stepan was to undergo surgery on Friday.

There was no penalty called on the play and Stepan returned to the game later in the first period.

“We looked at it,” said Vigneault. “The referees missed it.”

The NHL said it will have a hearing about the Prust hit on Friday.

In a scrum following the hit on Stepan, Rangers forward Daniel Carcillo made illegal contact with a referee and was suspended for 10 games by the NHL.

Said Vigneault: “What saddens me about that hit is, if the call is made on the ice, we’re in a five-minute powerplay and what happened to Dan Carcillo – and what Dan did is inexcusable and he’s gonna pay a big price for it – but if the call is made on the ice, he’s not put in that position.”

The Canadiens eventually won the game in overtime, 3-2 on a goal by sophomore Alex Galchenyuk.

The series is 2-1 and stays in Madison Square Garden for Game 4, which will be shown on Sunday night on Hockey Night in Canada.
