Wednesday's 5K run at Beacon Hill dedicated to Boston victims

The Wednesday night (April 17) Free Run at Beacon Hill Park will commemorate the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy from Monday.

The Wednesday night (April 17) Free Run at Beacon Hill Park will commemorate the victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy from Monday.

The five-kilometre run through and around the park starts at 6 p.m. on the all-weather field at the park’s south west entrance.

“We started the free runs three years ago. They’re just open events that people can come out and participate in,” said organizer Dave Milne, director of the Oak Bay Half Marathon and owner-operator of Peninsula Runners in Saanich.

“We talked about cancelling it and postponing Wednesday’s race but after a lot of talking and deliberations we’ve decided to dedicate the run to Boston.”

To Milne’s knowledge, it’s likely among the first organized races in North America since the Boston tragedy.

“Runners will be given a ribbon to wear on their shoe and we’re inviting anyone with Boston Marathon running gear to wear it for the race.”
