The University of Victoria Vikes men showed tremendous defensive skill and came within a minute of taking Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC to extra time on Sunday at Centennial Stadium on Sunday.

The visitors, kept in check by the gritty Vikes defence and solid play from goalkeeper Noah Pawloski, needed a goal in the 90th minute from Andre Lewis to score a 1-0 victory.

The match, designated a friendly, was the third annual meeting between the teams and ninth since the games began. About 2,500 fans packed into the venerable stadium for the contest.

“To be honest, we were very unlucky to get the draw,” said Vikes coach Bruce Wilson. “We battled so hard but at the end of the day we gave up one. It was a good game for us though, hopefully it helped the Whitecaps prepare for their season as well.”
