Despite the many tiny earth shifts that happen sometimes daily on the south Island, most residents don’t know what a large earthquake feels like.
The Quake Cottage shakes things up – and is coming to the University of Victoria this month.
Resources on emergency preparedness abound in the region and many are on tap for the Safety First Fair, a partnership between Oak Bay and the University of Victoria.
The event, held on campus and open to the public, highlights emergency and safety services at UVic and the greater community.

Highlights include the popular Quake Cottage that offers the experience of a large earthquake first-hand.
UVic organizations on hand include the bookstore, campus security, emergency planning, earthquake and tsunami science and student wellness. Community groups include Canadian Red Cross, ShakeOutBC, Ocean Networks Canada, Oak Bay’s emergency program, fire department and RCMSAR personnel and folks from the Saanich emergency program.
The Safety First Fair is Thursday, Sept. 14, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. near Petch Fountain in front of McPherson Library at UVic.
