World’s Most Peaceful Countries: Pretty Much, It’s Europe And Canada

Canada has been ranked the 7th most peaceful country on Earth, while the U.S. and Mexico finished outside the Top 100.

Europe dominates the latest list from the Global Peace Index, which has ranked every country in the world from most peaceful to most dangerous.

Seven of the top 10 are European and 19 of the top 26 are European, with Iceland rated the most peaceful country on earth, followed by Denmark and Austria. New Zealand (fourth) was the highest-ranking non-European nation in the list, and Japan (eighth) was the highest-ranking Asian country.

Canada did its part for North America, finishing in seventh place.

Meanwhile, the United States and Mexico finished 101st and 138th, respectively.

“The North American score deteriorated slightly, mostly on account of a rise in terrorist activity in the U.S., related to the Boston-marathon attack in April, 2013,” reads the report. “Aside from that, there was little change in the scores.

“Overall, the region retained its position as the second-most peaceful in the world, behind Europe (largely on account of Canada’s score).”

(Of course, if the Boston Marathon bombing effected America’s score so severely, Canadians could expect the shootings in Moncton, New Brunswick to cause global alarm for 2015.)

Bottoming out in this year’s rankings, from the worst to less worse, were Syria (ranking 162nd), Afghanistan, South Sudan, Iraq, and Somalia.

The report’s highlighted news events of the past year include the conflict in Ukraine, ongoing conflict in Syria, and a civil war in South Sudan.

Overall, the GPI says there was a “fall in global peace” in 2013, due to the measurement across four indicators: terrorist activity, international/external conflicts, deaths, and the amount of displaced persons.

“The past seven years have been marked by many changes,” it reads. “However the overall trend has seen a slight deterioration in peace with small deteriorations occurring every year.

“On the positive side, the improvements in peace were mainly driven by declining rates of militarization due to the winding down of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

However, those two countries ranked in the five most dangerous countries in the world.

Georgia was ranked as one of the world’s most improved countries, coming in at 111th overall, six years after it was embroiled in a crisis with Russia.

Russia, meanwhile, finished 152nd in the world – last in its region of ‘Russia and Eurasia’.
