Fall storm leaves 2,000 Peninsula, Highlands, Langford homes without power

Storm that dropped snow on the Malahat is expected to abate Wednesday morning

Parts of Greater Victoria are without power and parts of Malahat Drive remain slushy after a fall storm brought heavy rain, snow and wind to the region overnight.

Late Tuesday, high winds and heavy rains caused damage that saw 6,000 customers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands without power.

“All available crews are working to make repairs and restore power. Due to the extent of damage and the number of outages, we expect some customers in the hardest-hit areas without power overnight,” BC Hydro said in a statement. “This includes customers on the Southern Gulf Islands. Additional crews will arrive on the first ferries in the morning to aid restoration efforts.

As of Wednesday (Oct. 25) morning, 1,170 households in Central Saanich and North Saanich had been without power since just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

More than 900 users in Highlands and Langford lost power just before 6 a.m.

Environment Canada issued a new rainfall warning for the region Wednesday with 60 mm expected from Goldstream through to Nanaimo.

“A low-pressure system moved past the B.C. south coast overnight. Rain has begun to ease over the region, however, periods of heavy rain are possible this morning as the system continues to move away and weaken,” the statement reads.

In preparation for the storm, the Town of Sidney set up its annual sandbag station at Iroquois Park.

The station of sacks, sand and shovels are left to help residents who face potential flooding.
