Songhees First Nation, Saanich, and Esquimalt are working collaboratively to curb damage after an oil leak was discovered on the Gorge Waterway on Jan. 19.

The leak has been contained, but the municipalities and Songhees are still working to share information, monitor the situation, and assist where needed, the Township of Esquimalt said in a statement.

Booms were deployed in areas of concern and spill response professionals are assisting with containing the effluent.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy representatives were also notified of the leak.

The origin of the leak was traced to a home oil tank that has since been drained.

There were no reports of any harm to wildlife or other significant negative effects.

The township is asking if anyone spots a spill or notices the risk of one occurring to report it immediately by calling 1-800-633-3456.
