The first female warrant officer for the 5th BC field artillery regiment will be promoted to Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) on Nov 21.

Master Warrant Officer Lisa Kachanoski will be the first female appointed to Regimental Sergeant Major in the regiment’s 140-year history.

Regimental Sergeant Major is the highest non-officer rank in the Canadian Army. The role of the RSM is to be the “right hand” of the regiment’s Commanding Officer.

The RSM is also responsible for setting dress, deportment and discipline standards.

Kachanoski was born and raised in Nanaimo and has served in the Canadian Army Reserve for 25 years.

During her service, Kachanoski was deployed to Jordan and Latvia and was tasked with maintaining positive and meaningful military/civilian relations.

Kachanoski has also worked closely with Parks Canada, where she was involved in avalanche control in Roger Pass.

In the civilian world, Kachanoski works for the BC Ambulance Services as a primary care paramedic, a role they have had since 2014.

The promotion will take place at the Bay Street Armoury in Victoria.
