Victoria cops plan to make school zones a priority for the next few weeks after doling out speeding tickets on the first day of classes.

VicPD issued 10 tickets including one driver doing double the 30 km/h speed limit near an elementary school on Sept. 5.

The school speed enforcement campaign in the 500 block of Douglas Street near South Park Family School was just the start, the department said on social media.

Enforcement and education continue in school zones in Victoria and Esquimalt, the communities the department serves, for the next three weeks.

It wasn’t the first warning the department issued, using social media ahead of time to remind drivers that school zones came back into effect Tuesday.

According to ICBC statistics, 52 school-aged children are injured and two are killed every year while walking or cycling to school on Vancouver Island.

With the staggering number in mind, VicPD issued a series of tips:

Drivers should slow down and use caution when students, families and staff are walking and cycling.

When dropping children off in a vehicle, have them get out on the side closest to the sidewalk if possible.

Teach children the basics of crossing the street, including to stop, look, listen and make eye contact with drivers.

Put away electronics like cell phones, headphones and earbuds when driving, walking and cycling.
