Two of the worst intersections for crashes in Saanich also made the Island’s top five list.
ICBC has released its 2022 crash data, highlighting the worst intersections on Vancouver Island for crashes. The data does not include crashes in parking lots or ones that involved parked vehicles.
The Pat Bay Highway, McKenzie Avenue, Douglas Street intersection was second on the Island list with 60 crashes in 2022, up 20 from the previous year. Coming in fifth was the Highway 17 intersection at Sayward Road, which saw 57 crashes, up 24 from the previous year.
The worst intersection on the Island was in Nanaimo at Old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road, which saw 61 crashes (down 13 from 2021).
Back in Saanich, the third-worst intersection was at McKenzie Avenue and Quadra Street with 51 crashes (up from 49 in 2021). The intersections at Tillicum Road and Trans-Canada Highway (including the Galloping Goose Trail crossing) and McKenzie Avenue and Shelbourne Street both saw 40 crashes last year (up from 23 and up from 34, respectively).
Rounding out Saanich’s top five list was another tie, with Blanshard Street and Saanich Road, and Boleskine Road, Douglas Street and Saanich Road both seeing 37 crashes. The Blanshard and Saanich intersection was down from 53 crashes in 2021 while the Boleskine, Douglas and Saanich intersection was down from 52 crashes.
