The Royal Society of Canada is awarding 10 University of Victoria (UVic) researchers with the country’s top academic honour.

The researchers were chosen by their peers and are selected for academic excellence and their contributions to public life and the arts, sciences and humanities.

The Royal Society of Canada 2023 recipients work in the fields of human and social development, education, humanities, library sciences, medical sciences, engineering and social sciences.

The recipients are Mohsen Akbari, Magdalena Bazalova-Carter, Doris Kakuru, Onowa McIvor and Marie-Ève Tremblay, and they are UVic’s newest members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. Jonathan Bengtson, Alison Chapman, Eric Higgs, Cornelis van Kooten and Amy Verdun are also being elected as new Royal Society of Canada fellows.

“I am honoured that the work done at UVic, spearheaded by me – with lots of support from colleagues and students at UVic, across Canada and beyond – has been recognized in this way,” said Verdun, who was crucial in turning UVic into one of the leading research centres of European integration in North America. “I am looking forward to taking the next steps by keeping the study of European integration and governance relevant in an increasingly changing Canadian and international landscape.”

This is the most people the society has ever honoured at the same time.
