Four fires closed the Malahat completely for more than an hour Tuesday night.

Malahat Fire Rescue was called for multiple brush fires near split rock on Aug. 15 shortly before 7 p.m. The highway was closed completely for more than an hour as crews battled the blazes. A department spokesperson said two of the four fires were quickly contained and the other two were containable.

The section of the Trans-Canada Highway was closed completely from Mill Bay Road to Whittaker Road during the first 90 minutes of the blaze. It reopened to single-lane alternating traffic by 8:30 p.m. and fully reopened around 9:30 p.m.

BC Forestry Service and Mill Bay fire assisted local firefighters.
