Victoria Fire Department extinguishes Rock Bay recycling facility blaze

The fire saw 30-foot-high flames and was reported around 6:20 p.m. Friday

Victoria Fire Department’s B Platoon had their evening meal interrupted Friday (July 7) as a fire broke out at a recycling facility in the Rock Bay area.

In a social media post, the department said the report of a container fire came in around 6:20 p.m., but a responding officer upgraded the call to a general fire alarm after receiving more information en route to the Ellice Recycling facility.

Upgrading the response to more trucks and firefighters proved to be a good call, as the initial crews on scene were met with “extremely smokey conditions caused by the size of the fire,” according to the post, with flames reaching 30 feet tall, and a two-storey tall pile of lumber resting just 10 feet from the blaze.

Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading and brought it under control. There were no injuries reported in the social media post.

“A huge thanks to the Ellice Recycling employee who had the quick thinking to call in an excavator operator from Chew Excavation to help firefighters move combustible material. This allowed the firefighters to properly extinguish the fire and prevent any extension,” read the post.
