One woman is in custody following a police incident on Amelia Street in downtown Victoria.

The Victoria Police Department was called to a building in the 1500-block of Amelia Street at approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a break-and-enter in progress involving two people.

Officers on scene located one suspect inside the attic portion of the building according to VicPD spokesperson Const. Matt Rutherford.

Victoria police had taped off the block between Amelia Street and Pandora Avenue but were allowing people who work nearby to enter neighbouring buildings. Emergency crews were on scene for several hours, including police, the VicPD K9 unit and firefighters, and cleared at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Rutherford noted the suspect was non-compliant with police and out of an abundance of caution, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators were called.

A handsaw was brought into the building and emergency responders were seen working to get into the ceiling from the building’s top level.

One woman was taken into custody at approximately 9:25 a.m.
