Saanich Police have confirmed Jesse Doig, a 23-year-old Saanich man, was arrested on May 7 and faces three charges connected to a sexual assault in March.

According to Shelley Morris, CEO of the Cridge Centre for the Family, Doig was an employee at the centre for three years working in the preschool program in the mornings and the after school care program in the afternoons.

“From his time with us, he was a fine employee, he was respected by his colleagues and well liked by the children,” she says, adding that his criminal record check came back spotless. “There were no indications of any concern, so it was absolutely shocking to us.”

Morris and her team were alerted by the Saanich Police on Tuesday afternoon that a member of their staff team was going to be arrested and again later that evening once the arrest had taken place.

“They were totally cognizant of the fact that working in a child care setting we have ratios, we have children that need to be cared for and they wanted us to know that we would be short an employee by the next morning,” says Morris.

Doig has been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter and forcible confinement.

Brandishing a knife, a suspect entered a townhouse in the 3900-block of Wolf Street on March 17 around 2 a.m. and sexually assaulted a woman who was visiting friends for the University of Victoria.

“This was very traumatic crime that significantly impacted the 22-year-old female victim,” said Sgt. Julie Fast. “We have remained in close communication with her and are ensuring that support services are available to her as our investigation moves forward as a result of this arrest.”

Police arrested Doig late Tuesday night following what Fast described as a “lengthy investigation.”

Doig’s next court appearance is Monday morning in the B.C. Provincial Court House.
