The Township of Esquimalt has hired its first female firefighter.

In total, the town added four full-time firefighter positions to its roster. The new positions were approved by council as part of the 2023 budget.

Three of the firefighters – Kielan Hrasky, Lucas Hammond and Chris McElroy – have already been working with the Esquimalt Fire Department on a temporary full-time basis to fill in for firefighters off for long-term injuries.

The newest addition – Alexandria Marshall – joins the department after several years of service with CFB Esquimalt and is the town’s first female firefighter.

“We’re very pleased to welcome these skilled individuals to the department,” said Mayor Barb Desjardins in a statement. “As the community grows, it is important to ensure our services keep up as well.”

The added capacity will allow the department to continue with existing fire suppression and prevention programs as well as implement a new medic truck response model, according to the statement.
