An Oak Bay police officer took recent thefts at Oak Bay High seriously and set himself a trap this morning.
Const. Markus Lueder, the department’s school liaison offer, used a police mountain bike as bait near Oak Bay High School. He watched the bike for several hours until a man approached, opened his backpack and began cutting the lock.
“Our officers take their responsibility to protect Oak Bay personally and perhaps nobody more so than our School Liaison Officer, Cst. Lueder,” said Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties, Oak Bay Police Department. “He quietly rearranged his morning to enable him to spend a few hours on this ‘one-man operation’. That’s the kind of commitment I see in him on a regular basis and I’m proud to work with him.”
A 45-year-old man is in custody facing charges including attempted theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, possession of break in tools, possession of stolen property including credit cards.
