Victoria councillors are giving downtown tour bus operators two years to come up with more environmentally friendly innovations.
Four bus companies were recommended to use dedicated parking space downtown for a two-year term at Thursday’s governance and priorities committee meeting.
“We gave a very strong message to staff to create incentives for low emissions and low-noise vehicles in the future,” said Coun. Lisa Helps.
“But you can’t just tell a company to change their fleet.”
Staff had recommended a three-year term for parking space allotment.
Councillors also considered a proposal from a local business owner to use low-speed electric vehicles, but the proponent was unable to provide sufficient evidence the vehicles complied with provincial safety standards.
