Re: Paid escorts not a solution (Our View May 28).
Professional children walkers. Another great idea from a councillor. Not.
The root of the transportation problem is the number of vehicles transporting school kids.
Parents are concerned about traffic safety so they buy a minivan to do the job. Eliminate all these “mom’s taxis” and it would be safer.
When I went to school I never heard of any child being transported on a daily basis by a vehicle and none, to the best of my knowledge, were ever struck by a car.
A concern for parents is kidnapping or abduction. How many children have been abducted or nearly abducted in the last 15 or so years?
The big problem is over-scheduling the child’s activities. After school Tommy goes to tuba lessons and Mary goes to ballet. And that is just Monday. The rest of the week other activities are slated and in most cases these are not near school. Enter mom’s taxi and the journey to these activities begins.
If you live near a school or on a road leading to a school, just pick out the vehicles that are driving too fast. Inevitably it will be a minivan or SUV with a harried driver rushing Tommy to his tuba lesson.
