Speedskating fans need to mark their calendars for Oct. 28 as the Archie Browning Arena in Esquimalt hosts an adrenaline-pumping speedskating meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This is a golden opportunity for the community to witness the sport of short-track speedskating, a discipline in which Canada has consistently shone on the global stage since its introduction at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
The event will feature talented youth skaters from both Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver clubs, all set to blaze around the track in thrilling races, covering various distances with speeds exceeding a breathtaking 35 km/h in the shorter sprints.
Unlike most meets, which are typically held on the mainland, this event offers budding speedskaters in Greater Victoria a chance to compete in a true racing environment. For those aged 12 to 15, this meet also serves as a platform to qualify for the upcoming B.C. Winter Games.
The Esquimalt Speedskating Club, established in 1966, proudly celebrates 57 years of fostering speedskating excellence on Vancouver Island. Throughout its history, club members have achieved remarkable success, clinching titles at the provincial, national, and North American levels.
The club’s primary mission is to provide a secure and enjoyable environment for its young members while nurturing excellence in the sport, paving the way for them to achieve their aspirations.
