They call it the fastest game on two feet and it’s Canada’s national summer sport.
Registration is open for the Saanich Tigers Minor Lacrosse Association as box lacrosse season returns for 2019.
This year the Tigers organization is hosting a series of “ice-breaker” sessions open to new players at the Pearkes field house.
“Walter Gretzky famously said that ‘lacrosse was key in the development of the greatest scorer in hockey history,’” said Tigers parent and volunteer Andy Stuart. “More and more the modern athletes say that youth should play different sports before focusing on other sports.”
Lacrosse is a great physical conditioner, Stuart added, as it also rewards running speed and stamina, and develops agility and hand-eye coordination.
Youth who would like to try the sport out are invited to the Pearkes field house for either Feb. 3 or Feb. 17, depending on their age group. The open house sessions for novice (2009-2010 born) are Feb. 3, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., followed by 2007-08 born from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Then it’s 2013-14 and 2011-12 born youth invited on Feb. 17 at 4 p.m., followed by 2005-06 born kids at 5:30 p.m. Visit saanichlacrosse.com for more information.
