The speed limits on all roads that are categorized as “local streets” in the Burnside-Gorge and Hillside-Quadra areas have been lowered from 50 km/h to 30 km/h.

The City of Victoria considers “local streets” as roads that do not have a centre line, are used by fewer than 1,000 vehicles per day and are typically in residential areas.

All “local streets” in the city will eventually have a speed limit of 30 km/h. The lower speed limit is scheduled to come to Oaklands in the fall.

The timing for other areas making the change is still being determined, but all neighbourhoods are expected to follow suit by the end of 2024.

The city is providing window decals, stickers and lawn signs that say we go slow. The signs can be picked up at the Burnside Gorge Community Centre, Victoria City Hall and the Quadra Village Community Centre.

Victoria is the first municipality in the Capital Region to reduce speed limits on all local streets to 30 km/h

The change won’t be coming to roads such as Shelbourne Street, Hillside Avenue, Blanshard Street, Bay Street and Cook Street.

The reduced speed limit follows a bylaw amendment approved by council in 2022.
