Fire crews in Central Saanich were called out to the Pat Bay Highway early Thursday morning for a car fire.

The incident took place near Keating Cross Road and forced northbound traffic on Highway 17 down to one lane.

Central Saanich Police say it was a single vehicle that pulled over the shoulder after the motorist realized their engine had begun to smoke. Witnesses say the driver had first lost control of their braking ability, then smoke entered the passenger compartment and the front of the car burst into flames.

The cause is believed to be a mechanical issue.

Traffic has since returned to normal.
