More than 20 firefighters battled a stubborn kitchen fire at a sushi restaurant in the 900-block of Fort St. early this morning.
Around 5 a.m., a passerby called 911 after noticing the blaze at Sen Zushi Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar.
Victoria fire crews encountered heavy smoke and fire upon arrival and traced the fire to the kitchen area.
Fort Street was closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for about two hours while firefighters put out the blaze. Property damage is estimated at $300,000, while the building is valued at $500,000, said Victoria Fire Battalion Chief Paul Kowalyk.
Sen Zushi opened in 1996.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
